IOPS stands for "Input/Output Operations Per Second". IOPS is a metric used to measure the performance of a storage device or storage network. The value of IOPS indicates the number of different input or output operations a machine or group of machines can perform in one second. It may be calculated along with other terms as well, like latency and throughput, to measure the overall performance of the server.
Our three main performance areas, how often IOs can occur, how long it takes for an IO task to begin, and the speed of the data transfer into or out of the storage device are simply defined in the computing industry like this:
- How frequently the storage is performing IO tasks is estimated in Input/Output Operations per Second (IOPS), and differs depending on the kind of IO being done. The more the number of IOPS, the better the performance.
- How long it takes for a storage device to start an IO task or latency, is measured in fractions of a second. The smaller the latency time, the better it is.
- The speed at which data is transferred out of or into the storage device is measured in bytes per second, normally kilobytes and megabytes per second. We all want more Megabytes per second.
SSDs have significantly higher IOPS value than HDDs. Since SSDs do not have a physical drive head that moves around the drive, they can perform over 1,000 times more read/write operations per second than a typical hard drive. For example, a hard drive that spins at 7200 RPM (Revolutions per minute) will have a total IOPS value of 90. On the other hand, a modern SSD will have an IOPS above 100,000.
Below is a comparison chart of IOPS in SSD and HDD.
IOPS tells us how speedily each drive can process IO commands. The red line in the chart reflects the result of HDD wherein the blue line reflects the result of SDD. The difference between SSD and HDD is huge. The SSDs perform 3.4 times the IOPS requests than the HDD.
